How to make sure your message sticks?
How to make sure your message sticks?
How do you stimulate your audience? During an (online) event, you’d like to share as much information as possible, but only a small part of that information truly stays in your viewer’s head. So how do you make people stay focussed and keep them connected to your content? For that, I’d like to share a few tips with you.
As you’ve probably heard me say before, adding variety to your online program is a must and a vital element for a good result. For example, your brain likes pictures much more than it likes words.
It turns out that people remember 80 percent of what they see and only 20 percent of what they read. For information that they hear, only 10 percent stays in their mind! With this knowledge, what’s the best thing to do?
Simply try to make your online event interactive to get your participants moving. Especially when they’re joining in from their computers. Take advantage of a surprising opening to really connect with the audience. Luckily, there are many possibilities to make an opening an exciting happening.
For instance, a physical warming up with uplifting music, live music, a singer, or even add a spoken word artist to get people out of their heads and into an experience or emotion that sets the tone. By doing this you’ll bring in a high fun element and of course, it will give your viewers inspiration and energy.
Another tool you can use is break-out rooms, also known as sup sessions. Here, the participants are split into smaller groups, and they can attend a workshop or lecture together.
A moderator can lead this session, but a workshop leader, the one who gives the session, can also do that. In this way, you can add inspiring sessions to your online event, where workshop leaders don’t have to be physically present. And besides, you get people to work together creatively, which adds to the overall fun.
There are many tools you can use for polls and quizzes. Try to have a variety in the type of questions and answers; a few open questions, a few statements, and multiple choice. When people see their own name in a row, it gives them motivation. And if you can also win a prize, you’ll have a bit of competition, people love that.
In short; a surprising opening, break-out rooms, a poll question, or a quiz, are all elements that will lift your online event to a higher level. It can create more connections between the event and the participants/viewer.
